There's Something About Naomi Lambell

Some cakes are made. Others appear to have plans of their own.

There is something you should know about Naomi.

She was never supposed to become a permanent fixture.

She was a creation. A cake. A rather lovely little lamb who made her first appearance last year, looking perfectly innocent and giving absolutely no indication of what was to come.

At least, that's how the story began.

Because somewhere between being created and becoming part of the Bombshell family, Naomi appears to have developed a personality.

And quite frankly, nobody remembers giving her permission.

It began innocently enough

Every cake begins with an idea.

Sometimes it's a colour, a flower, a particular shape or an interesting little character that simply demands to be made.

Naomi was one of those creations.

A little lamb with a face that suggested butter wouldn't melt, an air of quiet self-importance and the sort of expression that makes you wonder whether she's listening rather more carefully than she ought to.

At the time, she was simply another character brought to life in cake.

Or so we thought.

The trouble with giving a cake a personality

There comes a point in the creative process when something stops being merely an object you've made and begins to feel like a character you've met.

Naomi reached that point rather quickly.

She acquired opinions.

Not particularly helpful ones.

She developed a presence that extended considerably beyond her original appearance, turning up in conversations, inspiring ideas and somehow finding her way into places where no sensible lamb had any business being.

And the more her personality emerged, the more difficult it became to imagine the Bombshell world without her.

What started as a single cake was becoming something rather different.

A character with a past, a point of view and, one suspects, a few things she'd prefer we didn't discuss in public.

A lamb about town

Naomi has always carried herself with a certain confidence.

There's something rather old-fashioned about her. A touch of elegance. An appreciation for the finer things. The unmistakable suggestion that she considers herself considerably better connected than the rest of us.

With a name like Naomi Lambell, perhaps a certain supermodel attitude was inevitable.

She doesn't simply enter a room. She makes an entrance.

One suspects she'd demand a dressing room, impeccable lighting and a contractual guarantee that nobody touches the wool.

One could almost imagine her taking tea in a drawing room, exchanging pleasantries while quietly collecting information that may prove useful at a later date.

Of course, this is entirely speculative.

We would never suggest that Naomi is involved in anything untoward.

Certainly not in writing.

But it has become increasingly clear that her innocent appearance is only part of the story.

And while she may be made of cake, her personality has proved remarkably difficult to contain.

How Naomi became part of Bombshell

The funny thing about creativity is that sometimes your favourite ideas aren't the ones you planned.

They arrive unexpectedly, make themselves comfortable and gradually become part of the furniture.

Naomi did exactly that.

She began appearing in more ideas, more conversations and more corners of the imagination.

Not because there was some grand plan to build a world around her, but because she kept providing reasons to return.

A little detail here. A peculiar habit there. A suggestion of a story that might be worth exploring.

Before long, she wasn't simply a cake we'd made last year.

She was Naomi.

And somehow, that explained everything.

Some things are best left unexplained

Now, it would be terribly easy to tell you everything we know about Naomi.

Where she goes. Who she knows. What she gets up to when nobody is looking.

But where would be the fun in that?

Besides, we're not entirely convinced she'd approve.

For now, let's simply say that Naomi has become a rather cherished member of the Bombshell world, and we suspect you may be seeing more of her.

Possibly in places you weren't expecting.

There are stories waiting to be told, characters yet to make their introductions and a few peculiar little details that may eventually make sense.

Or perhaps they won't.

Naomi has never struck us as someone particularly concerned with explaining herself.

Keep an eye out

So, should you happen to spot a familiar little lamb somewhere around Bombshell, don't be too surprised.

She does have a habit of turning up.

And if she appears to be keeping a secret, it's probably best not to ask too many questions.

After all, some cakes are made to be eaten.

Others leave rather more behind than crumbs.
